McDonald's Drive-Thru Guarantee Attracts Huge Social Media Reaction When McDonaldâs restaurants in Florida began a limited-time promotion guaranteeing that drive-thru orders would be ready within 60 seconds, it seemed like a pretty interesting development to us. But we had no idea just how interesting others would find it. The response it has generated on the TIME Facebook page has been off the charts. And it all stems from what seems at first glance like some quick, little article about a limited-time promotion thatâs only available at McDonaldâs in one state. What gives? After reviewing hundreds of comments, as well as seeking comment from McDonaldâs, low-wage worker activists, and assorted industry observers, here are some theories for why the story received such a huge reaction. Concern for Low-Wage Workers The comments section discussion is dominated by a wide range of peopleâ"McDonaldâs workers, former McDonaldâs workers, fast food customers and noncustomers alikeâ"who essentially are worried that McDonaldâs employees will be screwed over by such a guarantee. They say that fast food staffers are already overworked and under too much stress, for wages that arenât nearly up to snuff. Thereâs âenough pressure right now without having to deal with this,â one commenter who said she is a McDonaldâs employee wrote. âThey are some of the most mistreated workers in our community,â another commenter wrote of McDonaldâs workers. âThis is a terrible, terrible idea and I do not support it whatsoever.â Worker activist groups such as Chicago-based Fight for 15 and New York Cityâs Fast Food Forward have been campaigning for more than a year to push fast food giants such as McDonaldâs to institute a minimum hourly wage of $15. As a Fight for 15 statement explains, âWe believe that people who work hard for a living should make enough to support themselves, their families and their neighborhoodsâ"and that workers should be treated with dignity and respect.â âThis is just another example of how McDonaldâs is the boss, despite what it says,â reads a statement released to MONEY, credited to Angeling Carter, a 23-year-old McDonaldâs worker in Miami who makes $7.93 per hour. âThe corporation sets rules and controls just about every aspect of its stores, from drive-thru service speeds to up-to-the-minute reports on labor and sales. If McDonaldâs really wanted to improve customer satisfaction, boost their bottom line and help the economy, it would raise workers wages instead of telling franchisees they are paying too much.â McDonaldâs responded to our inquiry by saying it was âgreatâ the post received such a big response on social media. A statement from the company also clarified, âThe 60-second guarantee promotion is reinforcing a standard weâve had for many years regarding timing from the âcashâ window to the âfood presentâ window.â Because thereâs been much confusion about what exactly is being guaranteed, letâs reiterate: The timer starts after the customer has placed an order, paid for it, and received a receipt. After that, employees are to deliver the customerâs food within 60 seconds. If they miss the cutoff, the customer does not get his or her order for free. Instead, the customer receives a coupon good for a free sandwich on a future visit to McDonaldâs. And again, the 60-second guarantee is a promotion only at McDonaldâs in Florida with drive-thrus (approximately 800 restaurants), only Monday to Friday from noon to 1 p.m., and only through August 29. As for the criticism that the guarantee is unfair to workers, McDonaldâs instead characterizes the promotion as âenergizing our crew and ⦠entertaining to our guests. Contrary to some of the Facebook comments, the feedback thus far from the crew is that they are having fun with it. They are engaging with customers in a new way and are having some fun camaraderie with each other.â Concern About Quality and Service Many commenters took the opportunity to voice their dissatisfaction with McDonaldâs drive-thru service even when there is no timed guarantee. âIâve had to wait at drive thru 10 minutes for a Coke,â one customer chimed in. âThe staff employed have no idea how to count change back, poor interpersonal skills, and little to no work ethic.â When employees are under the gun to get orders ready under a strict time restraint, the assumption made by many is that the service and quality of the food can only get worse. Commenters joked, âNow you can get your wrong order even faster,â and âIâll take 50 Big Macs and 24 snack wraps. Good luck doing that in 60 seconds.â Others offered more measured, sensible thoughts: âIâd rather have good service and good food by a polite employee than rushed, bad service with a half-cooked burger,â and âAccuracy is better than fast.â McDonaldâs maintains that restaurant accuracy scores âactually improved when this program was tested in Tampa and weâre seeing similar results more broadly thus far.â Steve Connelly, of the Boston advertising firm Connelly Partners, said via e-mail that the reaction shows how much people care about food quality. âThe seesaw between quality and speed, which has for so long leaned towards speed, may be coming back into balance,â he said. âPeople have finally started to figure out that something worth eating is worth waiting for. In a down economy, food is fuel. When the economy is less dire ⦠food elevates in importance. Dare I say, it may even be worth [waiting] 90 seconds.â Concern about Society in General Some received news of McDonaldâs limited guarantee as yet another indication that the priorities of our instant-gratification, rush-rush-rush society are way out of whack. âItâs sad when society has gotten to the point where it canât wait more than 1 minute for something,â one extremely popular comment reads. Another person commented, âincreased speed = decreased quality, and if you donât believe that youâre delusional, and if you donât care⦠well that shows you where society puts its priorities.â Concern That Fast Food Is Ruining the World When McDonaldâs introduced a creepy mascot named Happy recently to consumers in North America, the masses took to Twitter to declare it the stuff of nightmares. And sure, the idea of a Happy Meal come to life with googly eyes and big teeth might be a little scary. But that alone doesnât explain why so many people felt compelled to bash the Golden Arches. Connelly, the ad executive, explained at the time that McDonaldâs isnât merely a brand but âa piñataâ that some people must poke at every available moment. Likewise, the reaction to the 60-second guarantee shows that, âMcDonaldâs is a target for everyone,â Connelly explained. âNo matter what they do they will be bashed. This is very important to consider here: the people who donât eat at McDonaldâs or who will never admit they eat at McDonaldâs will smash them at every available turn for being a bad employer and serving bad-for-you food.â Indeed, the people who commented on TIMEâs Facebook page along the lines of âEating that timer would be better for you than eating McCrap,â and ânow they can kill Americans a little faster than Usualâ probably arenât McDonaldâs customers. At least, youâd hope they arenât. Concern That Some People Donât Read Beyond Headlines Many commenters said the guarantee was absurd because customers sometimes take more than one minute to order, or they donât have their money ready and therefore take up more time to pay. Others wondered why their local McDonaldâs doesnât have a 60-second drive-thru guarantee. And still others commented something to the effect that they will place a huge order that will be impossible to deliver in 60 seconds, and then come away with all of that food for free. What all of the comments like these reveal is that some of the commenters didnât read the story before responding â" or at least not very closely. (One commenter who did read the post chastised this group: âReading comprehension people!â) To clarify again, the 60-second timer starts only after the customer has paid. The guarantee is only in effect in Florida McDonaldâs. And if McDonaldâs fails to meet the 60-second cutoff, the customer receives a coupon for a free sandwich in the future. You donât get your current order for free. But why even bother with this explanation here? Every good interview follows the same basic steps. Commit these to memory, perhaps ask a friend to help you practice, and begin to explore possible business options for your future. 1. Be Cordial And Gracious Inquiring minds cannot just ask any question that pops to mind. Remember you are imposing on the franchiseeâs time, so when you call, get right to the point, that you are interested in the franchise and are hoping he or she might have a few minutes to talk about his or her experiences. Ask if this is a good time, or when might be a good time to call back. 2. Plan Your Interview You might want to plan a couple of layers to your interview. Use your initial research of written documents to help plan good questions. First, prepare a few questions that would take no more than 15 minutes of the franchiseeâs time. Then, write additional questions you might get to if the franchisee has the time. Ask questions that only this person can answer. Be specific about what this person knows that you cannot get in any prepared written material. For example: How have their experiences been with the franchisor? Did actions live up to promises? Were training and support sufficient? Would they buy the franchise again? 3. Show Respect You may not like everything the franchisees tell you, but you are after their perspective. So donât argue, play devilâs advocate or in any way imply their problems are due to their own inadequacies. 4. Listen The most important time during your interview is when youâre not talking. Try to draw out as much information from the franchisee by asking succinct questions, and then stop talking. Sometimes people need a few moments to clarify their thoughts before responding. 5. Clarify Even with the best listening skills, you may miss some of what is said. Donât be shy about asking your source to repeat something or clarify an answer you may not have understood. As most journalism professors will tell you, thereâs no such thing as a stupid question. The question you wish you had asked is another thing. 6. Follow Up As you go through your notes, and something important pops out that you fear you may have misunderstood or gotten wrong in your notes, call back. Most people appreciate conscientious attempts to get it right. Just remember to be respectful of the franchiseesâ time. And it never hurts to drop a thank you email after the interview.
